About Light Metals Research Centre

Light Metals Research Centre (LMRC) is a dedicated centre for light metals research, development and training. It was founded in 2002 as part of Auckland UniServices Ltd. The centre has around 16 professional and doctoral researchers and several contributing academics from The University of Auckland.

LMRC supports the global aluminium industry in the following areas:

  • Alumina and its production process Reduction technology
  • Environmental technology
  • Anode and Cathode technology
  • Casthouse technology


Part of this support includes long-standing relationships with a major cathode, sidewall ceramic and alumina suppliers. LMRC's activities centre around four focuses:

  • Fundamental research
  • Consulting & technical support (including materials testing)
  • New technologies & technology transfer
  • Industrial training & education.


The team at LMRC has won a succession of awards through The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), USA and is the largest contributor of aluminium research papers at TMS Annual Meetings outside of Chinese institutes in recent years. We advise international smelting corporations such as Alcoa, Rio Tinto Alcan, Alba, Trimet Aluminium, Hydro Aluminium and key Chinese players (e.g. SAMI, GAMI, East Hope) on a regular basis. We also advise governmental bodies such as the US EPA and the IPCC.
